Dailies for the Week of 2/9/15 – 2/13/15

Sssssix? Six? SIX VIDEOS? OH MY GOD

MONDAY

Ohhh, no, Ecko. This was technically Marc Ecko’s first appearance in a game as well, his second coming in Marc Ecko’s Getting Up for the XBOX and PS3. I’m really proud of him and the members of De La Soul for appearing in a Madden game as perfect human beings.

TUESDAY

This is the one video I’ve put off uploading for a long time because any of the times I got really angry about games in middle school or high school are basically the most embarrassing moments of my life. To say that I broke controllers is genuinely my greatest shame at the moment. Because I did. I broke an XBOX 360 controller, I broke an XBOX controller, and I broke a PS2 controller all over sports games (also I nearly broke one over Track & Field for the 360 when I jokingly threw it at a pillow and it hit a wall). When I was in elementary school, I broke a Game Boy Advance SP over fucking Cheese Bridge Area and I’m not even sad about it, that was bullshit, Nintendo knows it, I know it, and Mario had it coming.

The College Classic I was trying in NCAA Football 2005 for this video was the hardest aspect of any game I’ve ever played. You start down by 20. You have to recover two onside kicks, basically, and score three touchdowns in five minutes. Now, that actually happened, and Jim McMahon pulled off one of the most impressive comebacks of all time. At sixteen, I was no Punky QB. Even now, at nineteen, I’m no Punky QB, and I’m barely closer to being a Punky QB than I was at sixteen. I will likely never be a Punky QB.

The attempt in this video was the closest I ever got to completing this classic, wherein I actually did recover two onside kicks and got into a position where I had the ball at the end of the game. Unfortunately, I didn’t make it into the endzone and I lost by six. There’s a follow up to this wherein I throw the controller into the woods. It was therapeutic and I only sort of feel ashamed. When I broke the 360 controller, I feel bad about that instance. I feel worse about the XBOX controller because it really just came out of shock when my game crashed. I also broke a mouse in high school. I left a wake of destruction in my years of high school, but that actually all stopped by the time I got to senior year.

THURSDAY

What’s up boy

This video may come up later. This video definitely comes up later.

FRIDAY

It’s a new era in Sports of the Day wherein I record in post. That may be the last time that I record in post because it’s time consuming and I don’t get to say as much as I want. I do, however, love Madden 2002 and Ron Dayne.

And guess what boys, it’s Old Sports Games 29. I’m finally doing what I said I wouldn’t: Covering yearly released football games. This may have been the easiest episode I ever wrote, because it was so easy to complain about. Very few games have the breadth of easy complaints that NFL 2K1 has, because they all deal with your success in the game. If I complain about how jerky NBA Inside Drive 2004 was, it’s not so easy to comprehend without actually seeing and playing the game. In NFL 2K1, the flaws are so evident, and I just have to think back to every time I tried to complete a pass but the receiver dropped it after being slightly grazed or every pass that the receiver tried to catch with his elbows or every time a blocker ran around a defender. It took me maybe 45 minutes to draft up and I barely edited it afterwards. People always told me it’s good, but I know different.

Monday Update – 2/10/15

I know it’s Tuesday

Madden 2002 (GC): First Appearance

I wanna talk about how sad this is. You know that thing that a lot of kids do in Madden games where they create a team of players at all 100 skill ratings, or maybe they put themselves in at Quarterback at all 100. I know I did it in middle school. Once I got to high school, I started feeling weird about that and stopped, specifically I felt weird about putting myself into games. I said “that would be really, really depressing” when it came to putting myself into Road to Glory mode in NCAA Football 12.

Marc Ecko and a bunch of hip-hop stars (and motocross guy Mike Metzger) did that exact thing as adults, then put themselves in a game, which was sold to millions of people. It’s cool to be in a video game, sure, but still, come on.

Sam & Max Hit the Road (PC): First Appearance

I finally started this game up. I’m not far in it at all, so I’ll hold off on talking about it until I play some more of it.

NFL 2K3 (GC): First Appearance

I like playing through a series like this, because with every next game, I actually see the game get better and progress. Unfortunately, 2K4 (released as ESPN NFL Football) didn’t see a GameCube release, and neither did 2K5. 2K4 was the one game I basically never played, though I did own it at one point (BlockBuster would sell off old NFL games at vastly reduced prices, like 7 dollars or so only a year after release). That’s all I’m gonna play of 2K3.

Sorry for the influx of exclusively sports games for the past few weeks. I’m setting up to play “regular” games some more now that I’ve kinda settled in.

Dailies for the Week of 2/2/15-2/6/15

MONDAY

One of the best yet. I did not run out of video ideas, no sir-ee

TUESDAY

I reference a comment left by YouTube user mrtomshipley during this video, and I would like to reiterate that this video was not his fault. I looked at NFL 2K2 and said “hmm, this seems like it’ll be fun” and then I started bleeding from my eyes.and my dreams since Tuesday night have just been a static image of Aaron Brooks’ face

Please let it stop, Aaron, I’m sorry

WEDNESDAY

Whoa! Who could have seen this coming? How bizarre.

How bizarre, how bizarre.

All my fellas in the back, street singers in the front, rolling down the freeway in the hot, hot sun

Suddenly red-blue lights, stop us from behind something something something

something something something policeman taps his shades, is that a Chevy ’69? How Bizarre.

FRIDAY

Thursday was a rough day so we got two vids Friday

So if I’m bleeding from my eyes due to 2K2, why not try 2K3? It must be better, definitely. I don’t blame this game for me losing by as many points as I did, rather, I blame myself. I am the worst part of NFL 2K3 and I am the reason why the Falcons lost this game

I figured it out! Hey! Whoa. Bet you didn’t see that coming

The Mon(Wednesday)day Update: 2/4/15

NFL 2K1 (DC): First Appearance

NFL 2K2 (DC): First Appearance

Both of these games are infuriating in different ways, which is weird because there’s only a year’s difference between the two release-wise and a lifetime’s difference between the two gameplay-wise. In 2K1, you can’t catch because your receivers can’t get the ball to hit both of their hands. In 2K2, you can’t catch because your receivers drop the ball at the drop of a hat. In fact, your receivers could probably find a solid job as people who drop all these hats for metaphors. They’d probably find work in that if not the people who test if a room’s quiet enough by dropping pins.

You can’t run in 2K1 because your blockers’ AI is so awful that they probably couldn’t get jobs dropping pins or hats and would probably have to swing dead cats to hit things or some other budget-grade colloquialism. You can’t run in 2K2 because your blockers are weak.

In both games, your quarterback takes like 4 seconds to move his arm forward and throw the ball. And to think, only two years later, this series produced one of the greatest football games in history.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater (DC): First Appearance

If you watch that video up above, I say that I’m gonna play another game multiple times. Tony Hawk is that game. I started playing it today and you better get ready for way too much information on how I play the first Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater.

The Monday Update and the games played in the Monday Update have been a little strange over the past two weeks, and I blame it on the fact that I have been busy, and the weekends have been also busy for me the past two weeks.

Dailies for the Week of January 26th-30th

Second week of classes and things have not become any less confusing

MONDAY

This is a thing that Ben and I did a lot when we lived with Joe at different points in our lives. Sometimes Joe gets upset at video games, in this case, I think it was Earthbound? I don’t remember. Notably, one time, he left the cabin for a really long time after losing in Rhythm Heaven Fever

TUESDAY

My camera can record in slow motion and those hats DON’T BELONG TO YOU

THURSDAY

I love NBA Showtime, but I hated all of the football games I had in my possession on Thursday. I actually purchased two football games Friday afternoon in preparation for a possible Super Bowl Stream (though nothing will ever beat the legendary 2013 Super Bowl Stream, which ended in me playing Donkey Kong Country)

FRIDAY

We did get a Sports of the Day Super Bowl Special (a SOTDSBS), and let me tell you, that’s not a good game Acclaim made there. Spoiler: It’s unplayable and I’m glad Acclaim’s not still making football games.

Monday Update: 1/26/15

I moved back to school this week, and it’s been very busy. This week will be busy as well, but I’ll probably have more time to do things once the weekend comes. Therefore, the Monday Update will be one of those hybrid Monday Updates where I talk about games and other forms of entertainment.

NBA 2K15 (XBONE): Ninth Appearance, Last Appearance 1/12/15

Things are… turning around? Things are turning around? Are you looking at me in the face right now and telling my that my MyCareer team’s chances are turning for the future? Yes! I finally beat 2 good teams, one of which was the Washington Wizards and John Wall, who is very good. Also, my team, the Sacramento Kings, traded two players to Portland for two other players: 1 rookie, and…

wait for it…

Thomas Robinson

That’s right, Thomas Robinson, who is apparently really good in 2016, because he took a starting role. It’s really funny to think that Sacramento would ever go back after Thomas Robinson after the way that they got rid of him a few years ago. It’d be like picking Jimmer Fredette up in exchange for a 1st round draft pick. Speaking of which, did anyone notice who was picked immediately after Jimmer in 2011? He didn’t do anything of note.

Parks and Recreation (TV): I don’t really count these as appearances

Parks and Rec is back? I don’t get into shows that come back generally, and I’m not saying that as any sort of ‘badge of honor’ or anything, it’s just bad luck, or I hear about something well after it’s over. For instance, Community was and is my favorite show, but Season 5 was the first season I actually watched as it aired. This will be the only season of Parks that I will be watching as it airs.

I enjoyed the first three episodes of the season, but episode four, “Leslie & Ron,” changed my opinion of the season for the better. I felt like Ron was so needlessly misanthropic and spiteful in those first three episodes, and I still think it was written sort of clumsily, but at least “Leslie & Ron” gives us an explanation.

Rick and Morty (TV): Yeah don’t worry I’ll talk about games next Monday

This show’s really good. I think I mentioned the fact that I can’t stomach Adventure Time to Ben last year and he told me this was basically the antidote. I still can’t pin down why I don’t like Adventure Time, but I’ll freely admit to loving Rick and Morty. Plus, it’s only one season in! I can’t lose! There’s gonna be more!

Monday Update: 1/19/15

Halo: Master Chief Collection: Third Appearance, Third Straight Appearance

I have so much patience. So much more patience than I remember ever having. I have never actually beaten the original Halo, or Halo 2, or any other Halo game. I plan to beat the first four games at some point this year because I spent sixty dollars on this collection. I distinctly remember where I stopped playing the first game on the XBOX, it was the mission I’m about to start with whenever I pick it up next. In fact, I’m actually rather surprised that myself, age 16, didn’t stop playing right in the middle of the fifth mission, Assault on the Control Room. I’m not good at this game, and putting it on “normal” difficulty would theoretically help that. But that actually doesn’t help at all, because I’m really, really not good at this game.

The final sequence in this mission involves Master Chief single-handedly making it up a structure to a door, which he must enter and then fight his way through. I think it took me well over 20 tries to get up the structure (mainly because I couldn’t reach a checkpoint) and then after that, getting to the end of the level wasn’t a sure thing. I’m actually sort of proud of my 16 year-old self, because I’d like to think I have a better attention span now than I did then, and I came close to just putting the controller down and skipping the stage or dropping a difficulty level. My goal this time is to make it to the end, further than my last try.

Madden 2005: First Appearance

Last year, I played a season of Madden 2003. This year, I booted up Madden 2005, and I racked up seven straight wins. With Washington. A Washington team quarterbacked by the aging Mark Brunell, featuring Clinton Portis, the late Sean Taylor, and LaVar Arrington. Somehow, this team jumped to seven straight wins, and I don’t really know what to do, I want to change the difficulty up a level, but I don’t want to drop every game after that. We’ll find out what happens next on the next Monday Update.

Mark Brunell was a great player for a few years, especially from 1996-2001 or so when he was with the Jaguars. I remember him being a decent player after he left the Jaguars, and the Joe Gibbs teams he played for were at least entertaining, the last time that franchise was actually a good team outside of the 2012 season. Dan Snyder teams are like that, gambles on veteran players which could either be successes, like London Fletcher and a few years of Mark Brunell, or complete failures like Dana Stubblefield, Deion Sanders, Adam Archuleta, or, the crown jewel of Dan Snyder fuck-ups: Albert Haynesworth.

Forza Horizon 2: Second Appearance, Second Straight Appearance

I’m not a car guy, but I’m a fun video game guy, and I’m gonna try to keep with this game for a few more weeks. I’m interested in trying out Wreckfest, but I’ll have to have a decent PC by that point. For now, this will do.

Dailies for the Week of 1/12/15-1/17/16

I mostly recorded myself playing video games this week. Much like every other week. However, I think I actually put a pretty good episode of Sports of the Day together.

MONDAY

So this turned out correct? I think it did for the most part. Ohio State wins, right? 3-0, right? Basically. This playoff was fun, and I’m glad that we finally made it to this point. I think something about the weight of the three games made them all completely memorable. I remember Jameis slipping and fumbling for an Oregon touchdown, and Oregon’s ballboy’s haircut, and Cardale Jones throwing bombs downfield against Alabama, and Ohio State’s reverse pass to start the Sugar Bowl out, and then I remember Oregon being completely disappointing in the title game. I think I wanted Oregon to win, but I’m not broken up that the Buckeyes finally won a championship game after 2006 and 2007.

Hopefully next year is interesting as well, hopefully the Big XII gets a representative in, and maybe a cinderella team gets a shot. I’m thinking next year will be tOSU, TCU, Ole Miss, and Oregon. We’ll see how right I am about a year from now

TUESDAY

Sports of the Day finally had a really good game. I’m very proud of how this game worked out so please take a look

WEDNESDAY

In 2014, I made a reference to a video I wanted to make entitled “The Year is 2001”, a look at all of the EA Sports titles from the 2000-01 season. This is where it kinda ended up. I’m really bad at NBA Live 2001, but to be fair, it’s not good.

THURSDAY

I’m also very bad at FIFA 2001

FRIDAY

why did they do this

why would they let us do this

it’s right there, the hole’s right there, right in George Costanza’s crotch

right there

Dailies for the Week of 12/5/15-12/9/15

I bought new games, I played old games, and I put up a review,

MONDAY

Here’s a review vid. Next game is Cruis’n USA I think

TUESDAY

Crashing fake cars and not having to deal with the consequences of crashing real cars is fun as shit

WEDNESDAY

I was immediately proud of my comedic snap-zoom right here

THURSDAY

My sister made an MVP-caliber drop and my sister has a slow-motion mode so I’m happy with how this video turned out

FRIDAY

What’s weird about this run is the fact that I knew it was coming, I knew that a Banshee had somehow ended up there, but I just didn’t do anything about it? I think it slipped my mind, still, one of the bizarre but fun things that makes Halo the game that it is.
