Old Sports Games #30 Afterthoughts

I grew up on the Razor Scooter. I don’t remember when I got my first scooter, but I remember it having green handles and wheels and I remember riding it around my cul-de-sac in the summer, I remember riding it down hills and falling off, then going back to the top of the hill, and doing it again, and I remember the times I would adapt BMX tricks to my freestyle sessions and then promptly fall on my neighbors’ driveways. Along with this came the Razor Freestyle Scooter game, which was only available at BlockBuster if you were buying it on N64. I had it, I played it, but it didn’t resonate with me quite the way that Tony Hawk always did.

I call the Razor Scooter a ‘fad’, but I don’t think anyone’s ever starting anything with the intention of it being the Hot New Thing that gets forgotten in a few years. With our constant news culture and the self awareness of what actually is a ‘fad’ or ‘meme’ or whatever, it’ll be hard for anything to really start up anymore and become legitimate. For instance, Snowboarding has its technical beginning in the ’60s, and it’s in the Olympics, skateboarding originated around the same time and it has become more popular and legitimate over that time. With the constant understanding that something like the scooter started as a fad and had very suburban roots, first sold at The Sharper Image. People are still riding their scooters, and some have become very skilled at the sport.

Still, you don’t look too cool on one. Would scoot-ing (scootering?) ever have a chance at becoming a ‘valid’ sport? Is that possible? Would anything invented since the ’70s ever really have a chance at breaking into the mainstream? That question has to come up in conversations amongst Ultimate Frisbee players, Arena Football fans and players, and probably professional snowmobilers assuming that still exists. I mean, since the start of the X Games, we’ve seen the one event that was supposed to put atypical sports on TV drop Sky Surfing, Aggressive In-Line, Wakeboarding and Speed Climbing in favor of Rally and Surfing. It’s gotta be hard to start a legitimate new sport in this era (even though, in the case of Slamball and Arena Football, it’s typically a new take on an established sport). But look at this:

slamballLOOK ME IN THE EYE AND TELL ME YOU DON’T WANT THAT ON TV ALL THE TIME. IT’S BASKETBALL ON TRAMPOLINES AND IF YOU DUNK YOU GET EXTRA POINTS. That’s better than regular basketball and we all know it, we just aren’t used to trampolines yet.

Anyway, at least Soccer has started to become a legitimate sport in America (though I would argue it has been at a high level for a while and the mainstream acceptance will come once more teams start appearing in big cities, and more teams start winning) (For instance, Kansas City didn’t have that much of a following in terms of soccer until SKC started winning games). If you can’t get people to come out to games to watch oh I don’t know MEN DUNKING ON EACH OTHER NEARLY EVERY OTHER PLAY maybe you need to just give your sport a little more promotion. Razor Scooting has a more difficult path, because you look kinda ridiculous even if you’re doing really well on a scooter, but maybe it, and Sky Surfing, and Ultimate Frisbee, and Arena Football, can find a foothold.

Well, maybe not Ultimate

Monday Update: 3/16/15

Hey sorry about last week!

OlliOlli (PSV): Third Appearance, Third Straight Appearance

I love this game, but I learned to hate it as the game went on. Apparently the sequel came out this week, and I’d be more excited for it if I didn’t have so many problems getting to the end of a level and if I didn’t feel like breaking my dang Vita whenever I fall I’d be more excited for it. OlliOlli treads the thin line between ‘too hard’ and ‘challenging’ and sometimes crosses over to the dark side in unfair ways. Still, I definitely enjoy the game, trigger thumb or no trigger thumb (I’m getting an injection on Thursday for it by the way)

Super Mario 64 (N64): Third Appearance, Second Straight Appearance

So yeah, I said stupidly ambitious two weeks ago? I meant that. I meant exactly that. I want to keep this one going and I know I can if I space things out properly and don’t quit on games too often, but I’m glad I at least get to start with a game I know I can beat.

Razor Racing (PS1): Second Appearance, Second Straight Appearance

I’m gonna do afterthoughts on this one, definitely, because I know what I want to say about Razor scooters in general, but I’m happy with this review. It’s hard to talk about a game like this at length, but it’s kinda hard when there are only three levels.

Mega Man Soccer (SNES): Second Appearance, Last Appearance 1/12/14

I lost the goddamn Capcom Cup to a scrub, now I gotta get him back at the May-ga Man Soccer cup in May (as the pun would state). If you’re interested in the growing hot e-Sport of Mega Man Soccer, check out our blog at mm-soccer.tumblr.com

Also, Ben, if you’re reading this, I’m gonna take you down on the NES Ice Hockey Rink this spring at the Spanley Cupp

CBS Selection Sunday Notes

I watched the CBS NCAA Tournament Selection television special and took some notes. They are time-stamped, and most of them are incorrect predictions. I’ll explain certain terminology in italics.

NOTES FROM SELECTION SUNDAY

~5:05 WICHITA STATE SECOND ROUND

Is it possible that they don’t meet? Would anyone be surprised that both teams fall in the first round? No matter what happens, whichever team wins in this hypothetical matchup would have an absolutely insufferable fanbase for like 5 months. This is worse than Kansas State and Kansas in the tournament. I’m terrified because I already thought KU wouldn’t make it past the second round.

5:11 Villanova’s the second overall seed, not surprising. They’re a good team, and I know a lot of people complain about the One-and-Done Freshmen players, but basically their entire starting lineup is composed of Seniors and Juniors. They’re dangerous and I definitely think they’ll go far.

5:12 UNI’s DOOMED! They got the cinderella and they’re the mid major darling, they’re fuuuuuucked RIP UNI I often assume that a mid-major team in the fifth seed will lose in the first round. Drake in ’08 lost in the first round, since then I’ve picked any mid-major in the five seed to lose. Wichita State in 2012, Utah in 2009, Temple in 2010 all lost. I was real confident that Butler would lose in 2010 and I don’t exactly remember how that worked out.

5:13 I think Irvine could pull off an upset here as well, we could see a 12-13 second round here.

5:14 I’m guessing Virginia doesn’t get to the sweet sixteen in this bracket

5:15 no don’t give Dayton a home game that doesn’t make sense

5:19 The enterprise ad reminds me of what March is really all about: Hearing the opening bit of Send Me On My Way like 35 times per day.

5:21 Disappointed that North Florida probably won’t get a shot at Duke, but don’t underestimate the potential of Duke Choking

5:22 Can I get a hell yeah? Stephen F. Austin always wins

5:22 Remember GAGOFR: Georgetown Always Goes Out in the First Round

5:23 I like seeing Davidson as a 10 because they’ve done well in that spot before

5:24 oh good the Blazers. I’ll always pull for UAB from now on because of their football team’s dissolution

5:25 I think the selection committee just put UCLA up there to mess with Joe Lunardi. I’ve stopped complaining about whether or not a team should make the field after a few years, but it’s fun to see people get mad and it’s also fun to see ESPN’s guy get something wrong. That honestly felt like the committee pulled a Strong Bad “‘CAUSE YOU CAN’T CONTROL ME” there.

5:29 Does Kaminsky have a GoPro taped to his chest? #NICE Fondling the Big Ten trophy? ##NICE

5:30 Oregon and Oklahoma State could be fun, I guess, I don’t know

5:31 Wouldn’t be surprised if Wofford pulls that off

5:32 West region has a bit of a #nerdfight going on There was a lot of controversy at UNC on this sort of thing so I don’t know if it’s really #nerdfight

5:32 If Wisconsin and Arizona meet in the quarterfinal I think it’ll be a “ZONA’S BACK AND THEY’RE PISSED” scenarios

5:33 BAYLOR A 3? SHIIIIIIIT #BearDownForMidterms #TheDreamIsReal #OneBearChampion Last week I was talking about how Baylor would be the most interesting team in the Big XII tournament last week and I still think they’ll do something interesting. Scott Drew either wins in such a weird way or loses in a flaming phoenix-style death

5:34 if GSU’s coach is coaching from a chair I’ll have so much respect for him Georgia State’s coach tore his achilles while celebrating after the conference tournament today

5:36 Sad about CSU, specifically sad that the kid who dresses like a Ram won’t be on TV.

5:37 Damn, people are really upset about UCLA.

5:43 GOTTLIEB’S BACK AND HE’S PISSED Gottlieb was complaining hard at the NCAA rep about the UCLA selection. This might be a weird selection but it’s not gonna be even close to the stupid controversy surrounding VCU’s selection in the 2011 tournament.

Thursday Lunchtime Update – 3/12/15

I eat lunch on Thursdays in the student union because of a series of “Small Joys” I force upon myself every weekday. It goes along with Seinfeld Tuesdays (where I watch Seinfeld in my room between classes on Tuesdays) and Coffee Wednesdays (where I drink coffee between classes in the union) and Total Immersion Mondays (where I sit in the part of a building where there’s no cell reception and eat chicken nuggets). Friday is Friday and needs nothing extra.

Today is the day of the Big XII basketball tournament, and boy do I have opinions on it. Very rarely do I ever want a team in conference that isn’t the one at the school I go to to do well, but I certainly have a favorite this year. Kansas, Iowa State, and Oklahoma have been good in the same way as a car driving straight down a road with no bumps or problems and reaching its destination in decent but not great time has been ‘good’. West Virginia and Baylor have been a special type of good, though, a type of good you don’t see all that often. Weird and inconsistent good. Weird and inconsistently good teams are the types of teams which win championships or lose in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, and it will be sad to see at least one of them out in the first (second, whatever) round of the conference tournament.

However, the most important aspect of writing this is actually the reason why I’m doing this: I have a midterm at 2:30 and I should probably be studying, but I’m not. I could, but what good will it really do me? In the grand scheme of things, it’ll mean basically nothing. I mean, Biology for non-majors? Who cares, right? I do. I need to get studying. I procrastinated writing this already and Baylor won, congrats Bears.

Hopefully this doesn’t end up like last year where Marcus Smart took the KU game to overtime and we watched it instead of doing the midterm and I didn’t get to go home for like an hour.

Dailies for the Week of 3/2/15 – 3/6/15

Dogs was the best idea for a halftime show

TUESDAY

CHECK OUT THESE DOGS! Big and Baby Jay feigned unexcitement, but you know they were scared. Dogs shouldn’t be able to flip.

WEDNESDAY

I was doing well enough to start out with that I actually thought I was on the wrong difficulty, but hey, I actually started well for once! We’ll see where this goes

THURSDAY

I know my foreshadowing isn’t great here, because I literally tell you what happens in the title, but hot damn do I nearly choke for the second time this season here. While it’s not as ridiculous as the Denver game, and I did get a pretty good stop in overtime, and I won the game, and I didn’t really have to blame anyone but myself, it’s still ridiculous that I can’t have any decent second half offense.

FRIDAY

NO BASKETBALL

MORE DOGS

On a somber note, these videos were the final videos recorded on my camera before it mysteriously stopped working this week. I’ll maybe send it in for repairs but its issues are so hard to explain that I don’t know if it can actually be fixed (No thanks to Panasonic’s tech support) (Seriously, don’t buy cameras from a company that doesn’t specialize in cameras) (Unless it’s Sony)

Tuesday Update: 3/3/15

I’m not even going to pretend the update this week was supposed to go up on Monday this week. Yesterday started with me sneaking Zingers during anthropology class and ended up with police searching my dorm room. No, really. The hatred of Bernie Stollar knows no barriers. (Nothing came of the search, people spark up in my hall all the time and it constantly smells of weed and feces for some reason and they suspected my room) On that note, video games

NBA Courtside 2002 (GC): First Appearance

Another game of Michael Jordan goes up on Youtube. This is the fun new game that’s sweeping the nation. My all-time record in MJ is 0-3, with two losses in Courtside 2002, one in points and the most recent due to scores by other Wizards. In Live 2003, Jordan fouled out and the other players were forced to stop and watch as time expired and the other team ran off with the lead. Always an exhilarating game of Michael Jordan.

Madden 2002 (GC): Fourth Appearance, Fourth Straight Appearance

Figured out I’m bad at this game on a higher difficulty. Today’s episode will be at the same level, hopefully with better results.

Super Mario 64 (N64): Second Appearance, Last Appearance 6/30/14

Playing this this week was the precursor to the most ambitious video series I’ve ever even thought about. I always stop when it comes to ambitious video series, though, so we’ll see how it turns out

Razor Racing (PS1): First Appearance

Old Sports Games #30 is coming up by the way. I had a cold last week and my voice sounded like I was going through puberty, and let me tell you, don’t review games while going through puberty, so that’s why I didn’t do it last week. At least, that’s what I’ll tell you. I’ll be down south in the great state of Dallas this Friday and possibly Saturday so look for it this weekend.

OlliOlli (PSV): Second Appearance, Second Straight Appearance

Ladies and gentlemen I think that OlliOlli Gave Me Tendonitis

Is that the mark of a great game? It’s so great that I can’t play it anymore due to physical problems? That game has run the gauntlet of affecting me mentally one week, then physically the next. Stay tuned next week when my spiritual self becomes less connected to the environment due to thinking about hitting every roof with perfect a grind, and then the next week when someone tells me they can’t see my aura and can only see LASER FLIP + 5-0 GRIND + NOLLIE HARDFLIP + FS 180 + NOSESLIDE hovering around my body and never leaving. That is, if I’d continue playing it because my thumb hurts.

This is the second instance of “Nintendonitis” I’ve contracted. Last time, it was in 2010 and I didn’t play games for like 2 weeks so get prepared for me not playing too many games or at least holding a thumbstick with my index finger.

An Apology for Court Storming

On February 23rd of 2015, after Kansas State’s defeat of Kansas in braimlage branlage bramledge Bramlage Coliseum, Wildcat fans stormed (rushed/flooded/ran upon) the court in celebration. In the chaos of the event, one student and K-State fan made some sort of aggressive move (it has like six different names, I’ve heard “shoulder-check” “shove” “chicken-wing” etc) on Kansas Forward Jamari Traylor. It has sparked debate and controversy around the sports world, and rightly so. Though it wasn’t violent, it still happened and people still came into contact with players, which is a big no-no.

goin like %22grahhh%22

He was probably goin’ like “grahhhh” when he was doing it too, I can’t read lips well

I am not this student. I do not know this student, but he looks like a Nathan or something like that. But I would like to apologize. I would like to apologize first, to Jayhawk Nation, for letting you down. I would also like to apologize to Wildcat Nation for letting you down as well. I would like to apologize to the United Nations for throwing the word “nation” around like it doesn’t mean anything. I would like to say that this wasn’t done in any sort of anger. I would like to say that I got caught up in the moment. I would like to say that court-storming, if left unchecked, will lead to violence and potential danger for fans, players, coaches, and officials alike. There are many things that I’d like to say to you, but I don’t know how.

Because maybe, you’re gonna be the one that saves me

and after all

you’re my Wonderwall

other guy

Back beat, the word is on the street that the fire in your heart is out

I’m sure, you’ve heard it all before but you never really had the doubt

I don’t believe that anybody feels the way I do about you now

Men's Basketball Mugs

and all the roads we have to walk are winding

and all the lights that leads us there are blinding

There are many things that I would like to say to you, but I don’t know how

I said maybe

You’re gonna be the one that saves me

and after all

You’re my Wonderwall

I said maybe (I said maybe)

You’re gonna be the one that saves me (saves me)

Monday Update: 2/23/15

Monday again? Problem. Big problem. I went home over the weekend, and a friend bought a Vita, which made me think about my Vita, which I have, so I bought a game at a low price for that console.

OlliOlli (PSV): First Appearance

Okay so I know I’m one of the only people who cares about skateboarding games anymore. I’ve written and created videos detailing how I feel about Tony Hawk and Skate in great depth, because both series instilled a love of fake skateboarding inside me. Now, if I see a skateboard game, I generally go out and buy it because there aren’t enough and neither series really updates (I did buy Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD a few years ago, to be fair, but that was the last one.)

So along comes this sidescroller 2D skating game, which I had often heard about but never tried. Now I have tried it, and last night, as I closed my eyes, I saw my character jumping and grinding, and felt my left thumb hitting an imaginary thumbstick to hit perfect grinds. That is possibly the most positive review I can give a game, as it has infiltrated my mind and attached itself to me like some kind of Tony Hawk/Headcrab hybrid. Only a few other games did that. For a while, if I played Tetris during the day, I’d see the blocks falling when I went to sleep. I used to play Call of Duty so much, that I’d think about seeing areas I couldn’t see by throwing grenades, as if that somehow translated. Probably the creepiest of all is the way that I hear sounds from Wario Land 3 if I’m ever in an area with heavy white noise. I don’t understand how that happened psychologically, but it creeps me out every time.

So, congratulations, OlliOlli, you’ve latched on to my subconscious and have likely sent me down a path to psychosis in the future.

Madden 2002 (GC): Third Appearance, Third Straight Appearance

Somebody in a youtube comment on my Madden 2002 video said that I should keep making videos, and another person actually said “you’re really good at this.” This has never happened before, most people either tell me I’m bad or tell me that I have a saliva problem.

NCAA Football 14 (X360): Fourth Appearance, Last Appearance 12/22/14

There’s nothing interesting to say here, but I did play this game. I won the Big Ten, I’m going to the Rose Bowl, I’m not going to play this again probably unless I’m at home and need to kill 3 hours.

Diddy Kong Racing (N640): First Appearance

A lot of people tell me that this is better than Mario Kart 64. They’re wrong, and that’s fine, we can’t all be right always and we don’t all have to love the most interesting Mario Kart game in the series’ history. It is entirely in 3D polygons, for what that’s worth, and Mario Kart 64 doesn’t have that. Neat how you can be a plane and it’s neat seeing Conker in a situation where he isn’t quite so edgy.

Dailies for the Week of 2/16/15 – 2/20/15

MONDAY

This went up on Tumblr last year but it never made it to YouTube. I’m at odds with Tumblr now, I’ll admit, so I have put it up here for all to see. I unintentionally broke my Game Boy Advance SP trying to film a Demo Disc Dungeon video which never got released.

TUESDAY

WEDNESDAY

Part one and two are both good vids that cover five topics, many of which are unrelated. Also, Brett Favre, Ahman Green, the rest of the Green Bay packers, and the fictional LA stadium.

THURSDAY

I received a pack of Skittles and a pack of M&Ms on Valentines day. I do not love the two of them together at all.

FRIDAY

That’s right folks, another episode of “Joe sings on camera”. The idea here is that on an old episode of Pop-Up Video on VH1, it was revealed that Cyndi Lauper, on the set of “Time After Time” had to shed tears at the end of the video. If she was unable to do so, the director had some kind of eyedrops to give her. I actually used them on Friday night because my eyes hurt, and I used this song because the other famous music video featuring somebody crying and singing at the same time had deleted itself from my mind until this very paragraph.

Monday Update: 2/17/15

This sure was a week, wasn’t it? Things sure happened. I went to two basketball games on Saturday, there was Valentine’s day, I watched Seinfeld, and… that’s most of the non-game things. Here are the game things:

NBA 2K15 (XBONE): Tenth Appearance, Last Appearance 1/26/15

There was an update last year where I basically started out saying “I think I get it” and then proceeded to confirm that I actually didn’t get how to play it for about 3 weeks. I can say unequivocally that I actually do get NBA 2K15 because I’m averaging like 32 per game and blowing good teams like the Spurs out. Rudy Gay’s playing well. DeMarcus Cousins is playing well. Thomas Robinson is really good. Nik Stauskas? Still starting for some reason despite the fact that he misses every open three even though THAT’S YOUR JOB, NIK, THAT’S YOUR JOB, THAT’S WHY THEY DRAFTED YOU #FREEMCLEMORE

Madden 2002 (GC): Second Appearance, Second Straight Appearance

I’ve said so much about this game in the dailies for the past two weeks and the Update that I can’t really say much more. So I won’t. Instead, I’ll have you watch the game’s intro, which was the last video game intro cinematic that mattered.

Sam & Max Hit the Road (PC): Second Appearance, Second Straight Appearance

I’m stuck again. I get stuck all the time. I just gotta find what the binoculars do. Again, hard to write about a game like this until I finish it, because I don’t want to spoil anything and there’s basically nothing else to talk about.

Halo: Combat Evolved (XBONE): Fourth Appearance, Last Appearance 1/19/15

SHIT, SON, I GOT TO THE FLOOD PART! I GOT TO THE PART WITH THE FLOOD AND THOSE ARE THE MOST UNSETTLING ENEMIES I HAVE SEEN IN YEARS. I get really freaked out by unsettling, polygonal enemies, like the headcrabs in the original Half-Life? Turned that off and never went back to it. I saw a flood with a human head today in full HD and I am actually probably never going back because I actually started hyperventilating.

I should work on this. Doesn’t help that the flood make the game worse and I don’t want to continue. Halo 2 is a better game and I’m gonna play that one now.
